日本には数え切れないほどの妖怪伝説がありますが、その中でも特に人気なのが河童です。
Japan has countless legends of supernatural creatures, but one of the most popular is the Kappa.
河童は人を驚かせたり、いたずらをしたりする一方で、礼儀正しく、人助けをすることもあります。

第1章 河童との相撲勝負

昔々、ある村の川辺に力自慢の河童が住んでいました。
Long ago, a strong Kappa lived by a river near a village.

Whenever he saw villagers, he challenged them to sumo matches.
「おい、人間！わしと勝負しろ！」
“Hey, human! Fight me in a sumo match!”

その男は試合の前に深々と頭を下げました。
Before the match, the man bowed deeply.
礼儀正しい河童も思わずお辞儀を返しました。
The polite Kappa automatically bowed back.
すると頭のお皿の水がこぼれてしまったのです。
The water in the dish on his head spilled out.
河童は力を失い、その場にへたり込んでしまいました。
The Kappa lost all his strength and collapsed on the spot.

河童が最も好きな食べ物はきゅうりだと言われています。
It is said that cucumbers are a Kappa’s favorite food.
ある夏の日、一匹の河童が畑に忍び込みました。
One summer day, a Kappa sneaked into a vegetable field.
目当てはもちろん立派なきゅうりです。
His target was, of course, the beautiful cucumbers.
しかし畑の番犬に見つかってしまいました。
However, the farm dog spotted him.
河童は大慌てで逃げ出します。
The Kappa ran away in panic.
ところが急ぎすぎて大量のきゅうりを落としてしまいました。
But he dropped many cucumbers while escaping.
翌朝、農家の人は畑に散らばるきゅうりを見て首をかしげました。
The next morning, the farmer found cucumbers scattered everywhere and was puzzled.
それ以来、その村では「河童も慌てることがある」と言われるようになったそうです。
Since then, people in the village have said, “Even Kappa panic sometimes.”

後日、その河童は農夫の家を訪れました。
Later, the Kappa visited the farmer’s home.

That year, the harvest was excellent.

The villagers became grateful to the Kappa.

One Kappa became interested in human society.
そこで町へ出て仕事を探しました。
So he went into town looking for work.
最初に選んだ仕事は川下りの案内役でした。

ところが河童は泳ぐのが速すぎました。
However, he swam far too fast.
お客さんを置き去りにしてしまったのです。
He left all the customers behind.
結局、その仕事は一日で終わりました。
As a result, his job lasted only one day.

現代に河童が現れたらどうなるでしょうか。
What would happen if a Kappa appeared today?
ある河童はスマートフォンを拾いました。
One Kappa found a smartphone.
写真を撮ろうとしましたが、水の中に落としてしまいます。
He tried taking photos but dropped it into the river.
しかし河童は気にしません。
But the Kappa didn’t mind.
なぜなら彼自身が防水仕様だからです。
Because he himself is waterproof.
第6章 河童橋の秘密
Chapter 6: The Secret of Kappa Bridge
日本各地には河童橋という名前の橋があります。
There are bridges called Kappa Bridge throughout Japan.
昔の人々は大きな橋を見ると不思議に思いました。
People in the past were amazed by large bridges.
そこで「きっと河童が作ったに違いない」と考えたのです。
So they imagined that Kappa must have built them.
こうして伝説が生まれました。
And thus a legend was born.

河童はきゅうりが好きですが、実は苦手なものもあります。
Although Kappa love cucumbers, there are things they dislike.
それは礼儀を利用した作戦です。
One is a strategy involving politeness.
