前書き・Introduction
本記事は、田中角栄本人が自らを振り返りながら、日本の未来について語るという設定の創作エッセイです。
地方創生、経済再生、人口減少、デジタル化、そして人と人との絆――。時代が変わっても変わらない「人間のための政治」を、彼の語り口で想像してみましょう。

第1章 私は日本の隅々まで元気にしたかった Chapter 1: I Wanted to Revitalize Every Corner of Japan
私は田中角栄だ。もし平成から令和まで政治をしていたなら、まず地方へ向かっただろう。
I am Kakuei Tanaka. If I had remained in politics /through the Heisei and Reiwa eras, I would have gone first to /the regions.
東京だけが発展しても、それで日本が豊かになったとは言えない。新潟も、九州も、北海道も、離島も山村も元気であってこそ、本当の意味で豊かな国だ。
Even if Tokyo alone prospers, /that does not mean Japan as a whole /has become wealthy. True prosperity can only be achieved /when Niigata, Kyushu, Hokkaido, remote islands, and mountain villages /are all thriving.
私は道路を造り、鉄道を延ばし、地方に産業を呼び込み、若者が故郷で夢を持てる日本をつくろうとしたはずだ。
I would have sought to build a Japan /where roads were constructed, railways extended, industries brought to local regions, and young people could pursue their dreams /in their hometowns.
第2章 平成の長い停滞に、私は挑んだだろう Chapter 2: I Would Have Challenged Heisei’s Long Stagnation
平成の日本は長い不景気に苦しんだ。私はそんな時代だからこそ、政治が前に出なければならないと思う。
Japan endured a prolonged recession /during the Heisei era. That is exactly why /politics had to take the lead.
仕事がないなら仕事を生み出せばいい。お金が回らないなら回る仕組みをつくればいい。
If there were no jobs, we had to create them. If the economy had stalled, we had to make money flow again.
国民が下を向いているときこそ、政治家は「明日は今日より少し良くなる」と語らなければならない。
When the people lose hope and lower their eyes, politicians must look them /in the face and say, “Tomorrow will be a little better than today.”
第3章 令和の課題は、人口減少と地方の衰退だ Chapter 3: Reiwa’s Challenge Is Population Decline and Regional Decline
しかし、令和の日本は平成以上に厳しい時代かもしれない。人口は減り、地方では空き家が増え、学校が統廃合され、商店街から灯りが消えている。
私はこう言いたい。
「まだ間に合う。」
However, Japan in the Reiwa era /may be facing even harsher times than the Heisei era. The population is declining, vacant houses are increasing /in rural areas, schools are being merged or closed, and the lights are disappearing /from shopping streets.
I would like to say this:
“It is not too late yet.“
「地方に仕事を生み出し、子育て世帯を支え、医療と交通を守り、人々が安心と希望を持って暮らせる地域を築かなければならない。政治とは、衰退をただ傍観することではない。より良い未来を形づくるために行動することなのだ。」
Create jobs in local communities, support families raising children, safeguard healthcare and transportation, and build regions where people can live /securely and with hope. Politics is not about standing by and watching decline. It is about taking action to shape a better future.
第4章 デジタルの時代だからこそ、人間を忘れてはならないChapter 4: Even in the Digital Age, We Must Not Forget Humanity
令和はAIやデジタルの時代だ。役所の手続きも、買い物も、仕事も、画面一つで済む時代になった。しかし私は言いたい。
We live in the Reiwa era—an age of AI and digital technology. Government procedures, shopping, and even work can now be done with just a single screen. But I want to say this:
「人間は数字ではない。」
“Human beings are not numbers.”
政治家は現場を歩かなければならない。農家の話を聞き、商店街を歩き、高齢者や若者の声を聞かなければならない。画面だけを見ていては、本当の日本の姿は見えないからだ。
Politicians must walk the streets and see reality /with their own eyes. They must listen to farmers, walk through shopping districts, and hear the voices of /both the elderly and the young. If they only look at screens, they will never see /the true face of Japan.
第5章 私は人と人とのつながりを信じる Chapter 5: I Believe in Human Connections
私の時代は、人と人が膝を突き合わせて話をした。令和ではSNSが瞬時に情報を広げる。便利になった一方で、人と人との距離が遠くなったようにも感じる。
In my time, people sat face to face and talked things over. In the Reiwa era, social media spreads information instantly. While life has become more convenient, I also feel that /the distance /between people /has somehow grown wider.
しかし、どんな時代でも政治の基本は変わらない。
However, the fundamentals of politics /never change, no matter what era /we live in.
人を信じることだ。
人の苦しみを自分の苦しみとして感じることだ。
国民の暮らしを少しでも良くしようと努力することだ。
それが政治家の使命だと、私は今でも思っている。
It is to trust people.
It is to feel other people’s suffering as if it were your own.
It is to make every effort to improve the lives of the people, /even if only a little.
I still believe that /this is the true mission of a politician.
第6章 もし私が令和の政治家だったなら Chapter 6: If I Were a Politician in the Reiwa Era
もし私が令和の政治家だったなら、私は何度でも地方へ足を運ぶだろう。過疎の村へ行き、漁港へ行き、商店街へ行き、人々の話を聞くだろう。
If I were a politician /in the Reiwa era, I would travel to the countryside /again and again. I would visit depopulated villages, fishing ports, and shopping streets, and I would listen to /the voices of the people.
そして、こう語るに違いない。
And I would surely say:
「日本はまだやれる。」
「地方には力がある。」
「人には未来を切り開く力がある。」
“Japan still has what it takes.”
“The regions of this country still have great strength.“
“People have the power to carve out /their own future.”
私は最後まで、日本列島の隅々まで光を当てる政治を諦めない。
それが私、田中角栄という政治家だからである。
Until the very end,/ I would never give up on pursuing a politics /that brings light /to every corner of the Japanese archipelago.
Because that is who I am—a politician /named Kakuei Tanaka.

後書き・Afterword
もし田中角栄が平成だけでなく令和まで生きていたなら、人口減少やデジタル化という新たな課題に向き合いながらも、「地方を元気にし、人々に希望を与える」という信念だけは変えなかったでしょう。
If Kakuei Tanaka had lived into the Reiwa era, he would have faced new challenges /while keeping his unwavering belief /in revitalizing local communities and giving people hope.
時代は変わっても、人を中心に据える政治の大切さを、彼の架空の独白は私たちに改めて教えてくれます。
His imagined words remind us that politics should always place people /at its center.
